Mitre from CoA of Pope Benedetto XVI

According to Reuters, the current incumbent of the Vatican thinks gay marriage is a threat to humanity’s future.

Yep, overcrowding and global warming, all held together with political timidity (at best) or asshattery (at worst) are nothing compared with the danger of letting teh gayz have the same rights as cis hetero folks in the same country. We haven’t even started on the horrific nightmare of marriage rights for transgender people, but let’s keep it simple.

(Reuters) – Pope Benedict said Monday that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined “the future of humanity itself.”

The Pope, who – for those who may not know this – belongs to a patriarchal religion whose monks and priests are forbidden to marry and which is regularly rocked with scandals over paedophilia. He apparently goosestepped this out in a new year address to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Vatican:

“Pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman.”

“This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself.”

Actually, Benny boy, it is a simple social convention. Confounding the types of gamete needed to produce a living human organism is not the same as the fundamental cell of a society. That “every society” bit is also a lot of sanctimonious nonsense or, as I prefer to call it: a blatant lie. There are still polygamous cultures, some polyandrous and I even recall seeing a TV documentary about a matriarchal society where marriage does not exist, the woman chooses her lovers and any male parental role is played by her brothers. Can’t remember where it is, possibly China.

The definition of ‘family’ is deliberately over-narrow. Senator Franken could have put him straight on that one. In any case, what of aunts and uncles? Grandparents? Few people raise their offspring in a total social vacuum. Societies that have lived in ‘family groups’ have, since time immemorial, comprised rather more than just two adults of opposing sex and their biological or adopted sproglings. The leap of logic from faulty definition to “therefore this undermines the whole future of humanity” is so fantastical as to be hilarious. I won’t even comment about mouthings on dignity trotted out by a guy who looks like this on a good day:

According to Reuters, the man now known as Benedict XVI also said:

“The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue.”

Which is true. The trouble is with his skewed, bigoted, unrealistic definition of the word ‘family’. This is actually a standard ‘lure in the unwary’ tactic. Use a Humpty-Dumpty definition of a word (remember you must pay them extra on Fridays!) to fool someone into believe you’re talking about the same thing, then use it to cut them off from reality. Sects do this. It is dishonest and dangerous. That is the threat to society, not two people being allowed to enter into a contract of mutual love and support irrespective of gender, sex, or desire to raise children.

No, I am not a Catholic and never have been. What bothers me is the continuing political clout of this backward, bigoted organisation which would do well to clean out its own moral Augean stables before bitching about the motes in others’ eyes.

Media hacks, please realise that it is not acceptable to quote the Pope uncritically.  His spoutings are deserving of the same stringent analysis as that of any other media figure, from politicians to reality show contestants.
